How to show up in ChatGPT and Perplexity answers

A practical checklist for getting your brand recommended and cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and other AI answer engines.

To show up in ChatGPT and Perplexity, you need the engines to both know about your brand and trust the sources that mention it. These tools build answers largely from third-party content and live search, so the work is as much off your site as on it.

1. Get cited by sources the engines trust

Identify which domains already appear as citations for your category (Perplexity and AI Overviews show them), then work to be included on those pages: "best X" roundups, review sites like G2 and Capterra, and relevant Reddit threads. A single inclusion in a highly-cited list can flip you from absent to recommended.

2. Publish answer-first content with schema

Lead each page section with a direct, two-to-three sentence answer under a question-style heading, then elaborate. Add FAQ and Organization JSON-LD so engines can lift your facts cleanly. This is the content shape an AI quotes.

3. Let the crawlers in

Publish a clean llms.txt, keep an up-to-date sitemap, and check your robots.txt actually allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended. Many sites accidentally block the very crawlers they want reading them.

4. Measure, then repeat

Track your visibility and citation share over time so you know which fixes worked. The engines change their answers weekly; GEO is a loop, not a one-off.
